“Wacky Week” – What It Is
Feb 10, 2011 at 3:10PM This week is our annual Wacky Week at preschool. Here’s the quick layout:
Monday – Pajama Day
Tuesday – Beach Day
Wednesday – Wacky Wednesday
Thursday – Costume Day
Friday – Choice
Pajama, Beach and Costume Days are just what their names imply. On Wacky Wednesday we just dress up crazy with socks over shoes, upside-down t-shirts, etc. On Choice Friday we pick one that was missed by some of the preschoolers who don’t come every day, or we repeat one that was a big hit, or we make up a new one that just seems fun!
Wacky Week is two very important things wrapped up together:
It’s a Major Reward
&
It’s Pure Fun!
Here are some of this week’s Wacky Week activities:
- If possible, take pictures!
- Pies in my face (just whipping cream on small plates)
o Don’t use this for just any Wacky Week. This is a big reward that kids love! Hold onto this one for when your kids are ready for a very big celebration. I use it during Wacky Week because this time of year coincides with rewarding my preschoolers for having learned how to BEAT The Crabbies (all eight and many times over) as well as having reached a number of other preschool milestones.
- Gummy Worms on plates covered in whipping cream; the kids get to retrieve and eat the worms like bobbing for apples; no hands!
- For us, Wacky Week includes celebrating Beating The King, we color in the B&W version of King Crabbie (from the For Kids section) and then we ‘cut off his crown’. Then, we glue the crown to a popsicle stick as a well-deserved trophy! (If your use of this concept doesn’t coincide with Beating The King, you will want to save this idea for another time.)
- To reward everyone with their own crowns to wear, we got white paper crowns from Michael’s and added a bunch of crown jewels – a bit pricey, but really awesome and worth it for the kids! You can also print crowns outlined on yellow paper and have them cut out the crowns. This is great manipulatives practice.
- Making Valentine’s Day Bags – take advantage of any approaching special day that works out well timing-wise.
o By the way, kids LOVE learning how to make their own cutout hearts!
o Decorating the hearts is great fun too:
o Crayons
o Markers – Crayola makes a bunch of different kinds now
o Glitter
o Stickers
o We also made Valentine People – a large heart for the body & a small one for the head, use strips of paper for the arms & legs, with little hearts on the end for the hands & feet. Decorate as inspired!
- Finger Paint (we also did finger painting using pudding!)
- Sculpture-making using mini-marshmellows and toothpicks
- Do the limbo!
- Indoor Smores – safety first on this idea!
- Trace our bodies on butcher paper and color our pictures in.
o Kids love just tracing their hands & feet too.
